Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 causes Dreamweaver 8 for Windows not to remember FTP usernames and passwords

This issue effects Dreamweaver 8 users with Internet Explorer 7 (Windows XP)

Keywords

Dreamweaver, installation, update, internet explorer 7, FTP, usernames, passwords, Dreamweaver 8.0.2 Updater.

Overview and symptoms

Since upgrading from Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 to version 7, Dreamweaver repeatedly (most often after rebooting) fails to store / remember FTP usernames and passwords.

Findings

The problem has been clearly identified by Adobe and is confirmed as relating directly to the installation of Internet Explorer 7.

Adobe point out that Internet Explorer 7 was released after Dreamweaver 8 and therefore was not tested with Dreamweaver 8 and earlier.

Solution

Install the Dreamweaver 8.0.2 Updater.

Side notes

After ‘reportedly’ installing the Dreamweaver 8.0.2 Updater successfully and checking the new version number, the update had failed.

Adobe highlight this subsequent problem and link to a separate web page, ‘Can't install Dreamweaver 8 updaters for Windows after cancelling updater installer’.

One problem seems to lead to another. Trying to restore Dreamweaver with the latest update was a stressful experience and almost resulted in a reinstallation of Windows.

However, a simple and easy cure was discovered at the final moment. It might not work for everyone but it did for us (separate technical note):
